As you may have noticed, 2010 was a busy year for senior and rookie girl groups. SNSD, 2NE1, and KARA maintained their high popularity, while newbie groups miss A, SISTAR, and Secret managed to rise up strong amidst the rush of girl groups that permeated the industry this year.

miss A especially has done exceptionally well, earning the ‘Song of the Year Award,’ ‘Female Rookie Award,’ and ‘Best Female Performance Group’ at the “2010 Mnet Asian Music Awards.” The group also went on to receive the ‘Digital Bonsang at the “25th Golden Disk Awards.” SISTAR and Secret both earned rookie awards at the “Golden Disk” as well.

Yet as the year draws to a close, it appears that there’s a whole slew of girl groups waiting to debut in the new year. Many industry representatives are preparing themselves for the ‘girl group rush of 2011.’

The most anticipated group has been identified as six-member group Sweet Shabet, who recently released their album jacket pictures in anticipation for their debut in January. In Japan, they’ve been compared to senior group SNSD for their long and beautiful legs. Sweet Shabet has accumulated so much focus because they are the brainchild of E-TRIBE, the producers behind SNSD, Super Junior, Lee Hyori, T-ara, MBLAQ and many others.

Cube Entertainment, home to 4minute and B2ST, is also preparing to debut a seven-member girl group in January. The group consists of high school students, and has an average age of 18. Although further details of the members haven’t been revealed yet, Cube Entertainment explained that each of the members has the talent to sing live and dance at the same time. A representative revealed, “Our new girl group will be unique from the others in that their music style will be much like music from the last half of the 1990’s to the early 2000’s.”

Top Class Entertainment, home to Shinhwa’s Eric, will also be releasing a new girl group featuring the ‘kukak girl’ Kim Ga Young (from a segment on “1 Night 2 Days“) and Lee Seul, who already debuted in 2010 under ‘Honey Dew‘ with the digital single, “Like a Fool.”

Core Contents Media meanwhile has completed the final preparations for their new girl group to be debuted in May. Representatives revealed, “The group consists of five members, and as there is still much time left before their debut, we feel that it is too early to reveal who they are. We still have to decide on the group name and such. Two of them have exceptional singing skills and beauty and were previous actresses.”

The members are also said to be in their 20’s and are aiming to attract a fan base of similar age. “They’re not lacking in any aspect compared to other girl groups.”

When it comes to the hottest female pop group, most if not all Koreans would either name Wonder Girls or Girl's Generation (also known as SNSD, an acronym derived from the group's Korean name).

Both groups created a storm in the Korean music industry when they made their debut in 2007.

They have topped the music charts every time they release a new song.

Wonder Girls reached the top with their hit song “So Hot” in early 2008 and continued to gain popularity with their follow up “Nobody.”

“Nobody” was also voted the most popular song of the year in 2008 by many surveys.

The nine members of Girls' Generation came together as a girl group in 2007.

They have sold 100,000 copies of their album in Korea, being the first girl group to do so since 2002.

Girls' Generation has also topped music charts recently with their song "Gee," released this year.

The Wonder Girls are leaving for the US at the end of January.

On January 8, a representative for the Wonder Girls’ management company, JYP, hinted, “The Wonder Girls are leaving for the US in 2 weeks.” The Wonder Girls have plans to meet with CEO of their management company, Park JinYoung, who has been staying in New York.

With this news there are questions of whether or not this means the Wonder Girls are officially beginning to prepare for their American debut. There is special attention being paid to the move due to Park JinYoung’s recent declaration that he would do whatever he could—including investing all of his private expenses—to back Korean singers’ debut in the US. In light of these facts, it is looking as though the Wonder Girls’ American debut might soon become a reality.

The representative further supported the move westward, stating, “The Wonder Girls are currently completely absorbed in their English studies.”

The Wonder Girls brought their official broadcast activities to a hold last year with their final musical performances at each of the major broadcast channels.

Just when you thought the Wonder Girls tango and dance version of Nobody at the 2008 MKMK last month was their best-ever remix, here comes another one from the girls to top themselves again. Taking some inspiration from their 2nd fanmeeting earlier in the year, the Wonder Girls gave a 5-in-1 Nobody Remix version where each Wonder Girls performed a specific themed remix before coming together with a sexy hot dance to close out. It was great that every performance at the 23rd Golden Disk Awards was kept a surprise.

The Wonder Girls picked up the Digital Bonsang award for Nobody at the 23rd Golden Disk Awards Ceremony. Other winners include MC Mong (Circus), Jewelry (One More Time) and Brown Eyed Girls (L.O.V.E). The Digital Bonsang Award are awarded to singers who sell the most albums online/digitally.

To give a boost to the excitement surrounding ex-Wonder Girls member, Hyuna, and her possible comeback, JYP (or someone close to the source) has opened a dedicated channel for all Wonder Girls footage along with releasing its first video clip of behind-the-scenes for the Irony MV.

This and a specialized 2PM channel were linked up with JYP’s official channel
