Happy Birthday to Hwang Mi Hee, who turns 28 today. We are celebrating her birthday using the lunar calendar this year, but we’ll revert back to the standard calendar for next year (Cutkillavince calculated as Feb 14th)…it was a bit confusing.

There is a reason why Hwang Mi Hee is known as the queen of Really Cute Asians and hopefully if you aren’t convinced, these 28 photos will show you why. I have selected some of my favourite photos from 2009 and early 2010 from her appearances in events and studios. Enjoy!

Sorry for the delay, it took a lot longer to select the photos than I had originally planned!

The day before yesterday, Neway announced their success in purchasing California Red Karaoke. Yesterday Leon Lai's record company Amusic said that Neway violated the agreement between they had and Neway did not respect the contract terms.

Amusic said that they started collaborating with Neway Karaoke Box LTD in 2004, authorizing the use of their songs by Neway all over Hong Kong and Macau. The other day, Amusic discovered that Neway violated two of the terms in the agreement including: (1) alleged unauthorized use of the <You Understand My Love> MV (Duet by Leon Lai and Zhang Ziyi) ; (2) alleged authorize of foreign regions including ShenZhen, GuangZhou and Malaysia to use Amusic singers Leon Lai, Miriam Yeung, Janice Vidal, Jill Vidal, Michael Liang, Charles Ying and Aarif Lee with numbers surpassing a hundred.

Not worried about affecting promotions
Towards Neway violating the agreement, Amusic's CEO (Wong Hoi Man) expressed: "Our company already sent out the legal letter to Neway during the Lunar New Year. On March 9th, we received a response from Neway and will formally file a lawsuit against Neway for infringement." As Neway just purchased California Red Karaoke, monopolizing the market, will there be worries about affecting singers under Amusic promotions? Mr. Wong expressed: "Karaoke is entertainment for the public, but is absolutely not something record companies use for promotions. Also Neway should really respect the property rights and the contract." As for Neway, they have not responded to the issue.

THERE was a time when the name Chow Yun Fat instantly resonated with cinematic coolness.

Tall - he stands at 1.85m, a head higher than most of his acting peers in Hong Kong - and nonchalantly suave, he was the epitome of every woman's ideal macho dude.

Whether as the chivalrous gangster in A Better Tomorrow (1986), the dapper master gambler in God Of Gamblers (1989) or the gun-toting inspector in Hard Boiled (1992), Yun Fat never failed to ooze charisma.

However, the 54-year-old Hong Kong actor, who broke into Hollywood in 1999, has seen his star dim of late, what with the head-scratching string of duds he's been headlining.

Despite enjoying success with a couple of hits like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2003) and Curse Of The Golden Flower (2006), his action flicks The Corruptor (1999) and Bulletproof Monk (2003) flopped at the box office, while the historical drama The Children Of Huang Shi (2008) and last year's manga-adapted Dragonball Evolution were mercilessly panned by critics.

His latest work, Confucius, a biopic of the renowned Chinese philosopher, has hit a couple of hitches too.

'I don't fret about movie ticket sales'

The film, which sees Yun Fat in the titular role and also stars China actress Zhou Xun, opens here on 18Mar.

Some academics have pointed out historical inaccuracies in the movie, accusing the film-makers of fabricating certain details and getting the names of characters wrong.

Then, there are the comparisons with Hollywood sci-fi blockbuster Avatar, as both films happened to open head-to-head in mainland China.

Avatar was a resounding success with the Chinese audience, taking in 97 million yuan ($20m) in its first two weeks, whereas Confucius managed to rake in only 14.6 million yuan over the same period.

In a phone interview with The New Paper from Hong Kong, Yun Fat - or Fat Gor, as he is affectionately called - leapt to the defence of the film.

'Overall, I feel that it is historically correct, but that said, the life of Confucius did not contain many ups and downs, or highs and lows,' he said in Mandarin.

'It is impossible to follow the history books a hundred per cent, unless you are doing a documentary that aims solely to educate viewers.

'For a mainstream movie, it's just not possible.'

He emphasised that Hu Mei, the director of Confucius, had her own vision of how each of the characters should be depicted.

He said: 'Other biopics, such as Mel Gibson's ThePassion Of The Christ, are like that too.'

On Avatar's landslide victory

As for Avatar's landslide victory over Confucius in mainland China, Yun Fat admitted that he 'wasn't too surprised' by the ticketing sales.

'Today's young generation of Chinese are very Westernised,' he said.

'They probably find Avatar a lot more entertaining, with all the visual and sound effects.

'Confucius, on the other hand, is a story about a teacher who lived more than 2,000 years ago. No doubt, some youngsters will find it a little 'old-fashioned'.'

Box-office receipts, however, are the last thing on his mind.

'I'm an actor, and I just want to do my best in every role I take on,' said Yun Fat.

'As for things I'm unable to control, like ticket sales for example, I wouldn't fret over them at all.'

It is the same principle he applies when choosing his films.

He is drawn most to 'dramatic roles' that enable him to flex his acting muscles and isn't too concerned whether or not the film would be a major hit.

An actor has to progress as he ages, he stressed, or else, not only would he be 'bored', his audience would be too.

'If possible, I wouldn't like to repeat my characters on screen,' said Yun Fat.

'I'm not a gongfu star like Jackie Chan or Jet Li, I can't keep doing the same fighting type of movies,' he added with a laugh.

'Also, there's no way I can play the young, handsome gentleman anymore, it's a totally different era now.'

Unlike Confucius, who left behind several descendants, Yun Fat and his Singaporean wife Jasmine, who have been married for more than 20 years, still do not have any intention of having kids.

'Should I have a son or daughter, he or she will have to face immense pressure from the very fact that I'm in this entertainment industry,' he said.

'They will constantly be under the spotlight; the pressure will be too hard on them.'

Yun Fat is famous for being tight-lipped about his private life.

Jasmine was pregnant in 1991 but the baby died in her womb the night before the scheduled birth.

The tragedy hasn't deterred him and Jasmine from showering love on other kids though.

According to the Taiwanese press, they have been 'adopting children' for nearly 20 years.

Yun Fat confirmed it with The New Paper but clarified that it wasn't physical adoption, but 'child sponsorship' in the form of regular financial aid.

The kids they've sponsored live 'all over the world', he added, including Hong Kong and China.

'We felt that since this society needs healthy youngsters, we ought to do what we can to give them better lives,' he said.

And then there's his other famous on-screen offspring.

At a recent Taipei press conference to promote Confucius, singer-actor Jay Chou, 31, sent his congratulations to Yun Fat with flowers and a note that he had jokingly wrote: 'From your son'.

The two had acted together in Curse Of The Golden Flower as father and son.

So, does Yun Fat treat Jay like his own?

With a chuckle, the veteran said: 'Oh, I wouldn't dare to call him my son.

'He's very talented; not only does he act, he has branched into directing as well.

'We are great friends who can chit-chat about anything under the sun.'
