Yesterday night, Korean boyband FT Island arrived in Taiwan for their concert. To ensure that they would be in top form, they ate a Korean cuisine and had massage sessions before returning to the hotel immediately. The five members performed 18 songs to 2500 fans waving yellow flags, who seemed to like lead singer Lee HongKi the most. When he sang "Marry Me", asking if his fans would marry him, excited fans screamed "Yes"! During leader Choi Jonghoon's performance onstage, HongKi suddenly went offstage among the fans to shake hands with them, causing the crowd to lose control. The excited fans refused to leave the concert venue after the show ended, causing FT Island to reappear on stage to promise them a bigger and better performance next time, before they would contentedly leave.

The stars of the Japanese drama Nodame Cantabile took Hong Kong by storm yesterday when they arrived to promote their new movie. Both actors received a warm reception from Hong Kong fans. Tamaki Hiroshi later revealed his close relationship with Ueno Juri by saying he received chocolates from her on Valentine's Day!

Tamaki and Ueno specially made the visit to Hong Kong to promote their new film. Yesterday they appeared in Kowloon Bay for an event to promote Nodame Cantabile Saishu Gakusho ~ Zenpen. There were over a thousand spectators that gathered at the venue, packing the place to the brim. Yesterday also happened to be the Lantern Festival (the 15th day of the Lunar New Year known as 'Chinese Valentine's Day'). After collaborating numerous times as an onscreen couple, the pair were also fortunate to celebrate this 'Valentine's Day' together in HK. The organizers gave them a matching pair of teddy bears to mark the occasion. Both Tamaki and Ueno rang the gong to wish for the box office success of their new movie.

When asked how they spent their Valentine's Day? Ueno replied: "Usually in Japan it's the girls who write love letters and send chocolates to men. On White Day (March 14th), they'll wait and see if they get chocolates in return." At that time, Tamaki revealed, "I had to work on Valentine's Day, but I received chocolates from Ueno." The entire crowd erupted in cheers. Tamaki laughed and continued, "There's two types of chocolates. One is the friendly type and the other is the real type. The ones I received were the friendly type."

Later on, Ueno divulged the ending of the movie. She said that in the first part there is a bit of a bump in their relationship, but they patch things up in the second part to give the pair a happy ending. Tamaki quickly broke in and asked the audience to watch the movie. The movie was filmed across many cities in Europe. Ueno said she liked Czech Republic and Vienna, while Tamaki agreed that Prague had gorgeous countryside scenery.
<<Me Magazine>> Interview with Charmaine Sheh
Sunday February 28, 2010 Hong Kong

"Dating Gets In My Way”

On this day, while Charmaine was putting on makeup and doing this interview at the same time, her assistant asks: “So what do you want for lunch?” Charmaine replies: “We’re not allowed to order take-out here and secretly doing so is not good.” Based on this, it looks like Charmaine is someone who is good at following directions.

After completing elementary and high school at Hong Kong’s Heep Yunn Girls School, Charmaine went to Switzerland to study Hotel Management – thinking back to that time, not only was that country (Switzerland) and that discipline (hotel management) very popular, it was a dream come true for many young girls in those days. After returning to Hong Kong, Charmaine of course wanted to find work related to her studies and so only targeted 5-Star hotels (“Go with the best or none at all.”). In the end though, she ended up not going into management, but rather became ‘Miss Hong Kong.’

Definitely a resume worth mentioning.

Rising step by step in her career, rarely losing, evolved into a strong personality – especially toward relationships.

Since starting in the industry, Charmaine’s name and ‘boy magnet’ have been practically synonymous, as she has been ‘romantically linked’ to almost every male co-star that she has collaborated with, from the most uproarious (Kevin Cheng) to the most recent (Moses Chan) – even the ‘least memorable’ (Benny Chan)…….

Charmaine: “Why is everyone so interested in my love life? Perhaps there is a ‘mysterious nature’ about me?”

‘Mysterious nature’ – basically a synonym for ‘guaranteed marketing success’: not only is Charmaine ‘My Most Favorite Female TV Character’ for a major network as well as the TV artist with the most earning potential – in 2006, she was also named one of the ‘Four Famous Chinese Female Artists’ of the year, sharing the title with the likes of Ruby Lin (林心如), Liu Yi Fei (劉亦菲), and Vicky Zhao (趙薇).

At 35 years old, with a successful career that includes fame and fortune, Charmaine definitely wants to be in a dating relationship, however whether it is ‘Chan, Lee, Cheung, Wang, or Ho’ [Chinese surnames], all are only ‘side dishes’ for this strong career-oriented woman: “I’m not the type of person who listens to and obeys every single thing my boyfriend says.”

Up to this point, everything that she has earned (fame, money, success) has not been easy, so even if she has to sacrifice her love life, then so be it: “Every person goes through different stages in life...during the stage when the focus was on pursuing a career, dating actually got in my way….Even now, I don’t want a boyfriend who will affect me emotionally.”

It has been said that it is difficult to always win in both career and romance, especially during the times when you are not willing to compromise – choosing career then, becomes not only the most obvious choice, but also the most reliable choice.

“Don’t Force Me”

Being a woman is definitely difficult, however being a famous woman is even more difficult – the difficulty lies in trying to find a suitable partner.

Charmaine experienced her first love at the age of 18 – the relationship lasted more than a year and though it was said to be memorable, the feeling when she speaks of the relationship seems to be the opposite: “I had to go study in Switzerland, so we were ‘forced’ to breakup…nothing I could do about it.”
Today, when it comes to love, rationality still comes first. If she wants to date, she needs to know how to control her emotions; ‘foolish love’ has long since disappeared from Charmaine’s dictionary.

“I guess you could say that in terms of career, I already possess a sense of satisfaction; after the ‘focus on career’ stage, I did feel like dating a little, but my work [acting] relies heavily on using my emotions to perform…if in my day to day life I’m constantly letting someone control my emotions (when I laugh and cry, etc.), I can’t handle it…I would go crazy. In my opinion, dating shouldn’t need to be so crazy.”

Remaining calm while being in love? It’s hard though!

“How would that be? For example, with some people’s personalities, they don’t like to ‘open their hearts’ so to speak – they truly love you, but will close themselves off, even from you…it would be very hard for me to understand this kind of person and as a result, there is a lot of burden emotionally; I’m not that type of person at all – I can’t hold it in..I have to bring everything out into the open and talk it out, then things will be fine…with this kind of personality, it’s harder to affect the emotions then!”

(How about the handsome ones? Is it different?) “I’m definitely not opposed to him being good-looking…actually though, none of my previous boyfriends were good-looking.” (Really?) “Yes, really!”

Looking back, the artists she has been ‘rumored’ with – Moses Chan, Kevin Cheng, Joe Ma, Julian Cheung, Benny Chan, Ron Ng – are all handsome and cool…so then real life is different from film?

“I want a boyfriend who is open-minded and accepting. Things are different now, as I’m no longer in my teenage years or early twenties, so dating is a very serious matter; if the desire is start a life together, it’s not enough to just love each other.”

In order to find a companion, there will undoubtedly need to be some sacrifices, especially to one’s career.

“Sacrifice career for a man? Completely sacrifice? Then what would I do? Wouldn’t I be bored to death then? How can it be that we are together and he knows how much I love acting, yet forces me to give it up? Perhaps he doesn’t really love me that much then…..um….well, if I really really like him and know that he doesn’t really want me to work, I probably would sacrifice….BUT he cannot force me though and he cannot set the requirement to the point that I can’t change my mind.”

“I Was Once Betrayed by Someone”

Starting in the year 2000, Charmaine became one of the lead actresses starring in the most series; it seemed that everything she touched turned to gold, as each series that she participated in became popular. The more successful she became, the less of a love life she had, it seems – of course, this isn’t too surprising, since most men don’t like it when their girlfriends are ‘too good’ or more successful than them. “The definition of ‘good’ can be very superficial; perhaps the man is very ‘good’ at cooking, but I don’t have to share that with anyone necessarily – ‘good’ or ‘not good’ really depends on how people look at it. When you’re with someone, the most important thing is to be happy…the rest of it doesn’t really matter.”

Striving to find happiness then involves both dating and working.

After winning in the Miss Hong Kong pageant, Charmaine was immediately converted to an ‘artist contract’ with TVB. However, her performances in the first 2 series that she participated in -- <<The Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain 1999>> and <<Time Off>> -- were highly criticized because of her ‘little chick’ voice, causing her to almost not want to go to work anymore after that: “In the past, they would always tell me to play those weak, delicate, girl-next-door type of characters, none of which were similar to me in real life; just getting started in the industry and being asked to play characters that are so completely opposite of who I am – it’s difficult. Especially when I would keep getting criticized…at one point, I started to wonder if I’m in the wrong line of work.”

The filming of her next 2 series -- <<Return of the Cuckoo>> and <<Plain Love II>> -- was smoother and she seemed to be more ‘enlightened’ in portraying her roles. “My character in <<Return of the Cuckoo>> was very refreshing – her personality is very open, straightforward, and candid, which is very close to my own personality, so my portrayal was more ‘natural’ – as a result, most people felt that there was change and more depth to my acting. <<Plain Love II>> was actually filmed in China – the first day of filming, I already felt like a native of the country and felt very comfortable, so I was able to immerse myself into the character. Slowly being recognized for my acting helped to build my confidence and made me realize that perhaps I do have some acting potential.”

Within 10 years, from ‘not knowing anything’ to becoming TV Queen – looking back, Charmaine says that her biggest lesson was actually being betrayed by a friend.

“When I first started in the industry, I believed in people easily. One time, I confided in my friend some matters deep in my heart…the next day, everything that I had said was on the front page of the newspaper (entertainment section) – it was obvious that some ‘planning’ had gone into it. Luckily, at that time, since I was still a newcomer, I wasn’t extremely ‘newsworthy’ so the hurt and pain were not as great. Nowadays, though, I only confide in friends outside of the entertainment circles; after the experience of being betrayed, I don’t reveal as much anymore.”

“Attitude Towards Marriage is Contradictory”

Charmaine grew up in a single parent family. At the tender age of 5, when her father passed away due to illness, she saw the way her mother cried so sadly – not understanding the situation completely, she asked her mom: “Is it because there is no one by your side now when you sleep? I’ll keep you company!” From that moment on, mother and daughter would share a bed until 14 years later when Charmaine left for Switzerland – the next year, her mother re-married and moved to Hawaii.

With regard to her step-father, Charmaine is very honest: “He [Uncle] loves my mom very much and the two of us get along very well. When I was about 8 or 9 years old, my mom once asked me what I thought about her finding me a new dad – I told her ‘no’…after that, I never saw her boyfriend again. Years later, when I left to attend school, she met Uncle and at that point didn’t ask for my approval anymore.”

“To be honest, after reaching a certain age, both men and women need to have a companion in life. After Dad passed away, Mom had to face all the difficult situations herself – I can empathize with the loneliness she felt at that time, as I sometimes feel the same way now. The important thing is that she is happy – she can’t sacrifice for her children forever.”

Towards her Mom re-marrying, Charmaine is very accepting, however when it comes to her own marriage, she has a completely different point of view.

“When it comes to marriage, my attitude is a bit contradictory. 10 years ago, I really wanted to have a big family and was determined to have at least 3 children in the future. I always had this picture in my mind of seeing a long table in the dining room where a father and all his children are sitting and happily eating breakfast together. As I grew older, I discovered that raising a child is not easy – it’s a fine line between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ and definitely a huge responsibility….I would have to sacrifice a lot of things – for instance: career, time, space. These past 1-2 years, my viewpoint has changed and I don’t really have that desire to marry anymore.”

The desire for family versus desire for freedom – many single females struggle with this, however the difference here is that Charmaine is perhaps more independent than most people think.

As the only daughter among 3 children, Charmaine has never really ‘lived’ with her siblings. Her older brother, who is 6 years older than her, has always lived with their maternal grandmother and now works in Italy; as for her younger brother, who was born after their father died, he requested to live with their uncle in Canada from the time he was 9 years old; therefore, the 3 of them have pretty much been ‘separated’ since they were children. “Of course it’s difficult to part with them, however Mom also felt that it was best for their futures.” With only mother and daughter left in Hong Kong, their relationship was even deeper and Charmaine became her mother’s closest companion: “She has always given me a lot of freedom; ever since I was little, she never needed to review my homework or wake me up to go to school – she would only sign my assignment book whenever needed….I’ve always been pretty independent.”

These past few years, Charmaine and her siblings have established a routine where each year, the 3 of them would meet up in Hawaii and go on a trip together to ‘make up for’ the lost childhood together: “Three years ago, Mom had a very serious illness – there was internal bleeding in her stomach and a couple times her heart would stop….from that moment on, I decided to make it a point to take vacation every year so that I could be with my family.” As she spoke of her mother, the tone of her voice went from fast to slow, hard to soft – it was obvious that her mother is her life line.

“I remember very clearly the day of the beauty pageant – I could hear all of the cheers from the audience in the HK coliseum, but my Mom was seated pretty far away from the stage, so of course I couldn’t run down from the stage to hug her…that moment, I was very happy, yet I also felt a little helpless – that feeling was a little weird, a little frightening.”

When it comes to her love life, Charmaine is very strong and refuses to bend to power, however when it comes to family, even though she claims that she is quite independent, the dependency still exists. In fact, she does admit that in this entire world, she only listens to one person: “My mom has never fooled me or lied to me.”

It was a great impact to Michelle Yim when her most loved Wan Chi Keung passed away, she had always appeared strong after the fact. Yesterday at Wan Chi Keung's soccer competition commemorate, she went from Kowloon back to Tseung Kwan O for filming in less than 9 minutes. Initially not in a very good mood, Michelle gave a small smile to the media as she walked into the studio. Michelle's mood swings, just worries everyone.

That afternoon at 5pm when the commemorate for Wan Lo ended, Michelle picked up her assistant and they rushed back to the studio to continue filming for <Women Most Pain>. The media tried to catch up with her by car, but because there was a bus blocking the road, they were unsuccessful.

Not sure if its because she had to get back to work or because she doesn't want to be in anymore grief, but Michelle who was wearing a cap often tried to avoid the reporters. She would also often speed through yellow lights and drove on the double white lines close to the tourist bus. A 15-20 minute drive back to Tseung Kwan O from Kowloon took her only 9 minutes! After reaching TVB city, Michelle quickly changed into her costume (pregnant woman) and gave a small smile to the media. Reporters asked if she will be attending Wan Lo's memorial on March 29th? She turned around and left without responding. Right before she was about to enter the gates, she suddenly said: "I will announce it through TVB later."

Michelle has been experiencing emotional ups and downs, towards her current mood, her assistant responded through the phone: "She is fine now. You think she has a problem?" Producer (Lam Chi Wah) explained that Michelle was not late to filming: "We just started shooting late. (How is Michelle doing?) I think she's just tired because she had not taken a break since Wan Lo's death, but her acting has not been affected. I am not sure about her current mood though."

Michelle Yim had just recently lost a loved one and appeared tensed back at work yesterday. The cast of <Women Most Pain> including Maggie Cheung, Joe Ma and Power Chan arrived at the TVB cafe for dinner, Michelle was not seen with them. Maggie expressed that she didn't have too many scenes with Michelle in the last few days, so she's not sure about Michelle's mood: "Saw Michelle just now and didn't notice anything wrong, we completed filming pretty fast. We'll be done with the studio scenes by tomorrow, then it's just the outdoor scenes left."

Joe said: "Today I had scenes with Michelle, absolutely did not feel that anything happened, it's just like a normal work day. Filming went well and fast, even faster than usual!" Power Chan said: "We are just eating with Maggie and Joe, Michelle didn't come with us, we didn't ask why. But, Michelle seems fine, very normal!"
