Chinese 'Ugly Betty' Lousy?
Source: Crienglish

"Ugly Wudi", a Chinese adaptation of "Ugly Betty", is leading the list of an online survey for the lousiest native TV show aired in 2008 and early 2009.

The poll was jointly carried out by media like 163.com, a popular Chinese Website, and the Oriental Morning Post. "Ugly Wudi" is the champion with 3,617 votes, according to the results on the Website Thursday. (http://ent.163.com/special/000338GB/315dizhi.html). It is followed by the "The Legend of Bruce Lee", a biopic of the Kung-fu icon, which won 3,562 votes.

"I hate to see the new hairstyle of Wudi in the second season," said a blogger named Mei Zhimei, who planned to call for a boycott against the show. "It's like a skullcap and looks so awkward."

Sun Weiwei, an office worker, said the show was a bad reproduction of "Ugly Betty".

"I didn't get the same feeling as I got from 'Ugly Betty'."

"Ugly Wudi" debuted at Hunan TV in September 2008. The second season has been in progress since the annual Chinese Spring Festival in January to early this month.

But is Chinese Betty really so bad? Sunday's New Weekly, a well-known magazine didn't think so.

It put "Ugly Wudi" among the eight most favored figures on the TV screen in 2008. Bruce Lee was another. Wudi won the honor because she was a spokeswoman for ordinary people and symbolized how a poor person could succeed in society. It reported that the show rated second nationwide among the television series played at the same time-slot. It was especially popular among the young people.

"The young guys rely heavily on TV programs," said Zhang Yiwu, a professor with Beijing University, who was one of the judges of the poll.

He commented that the screening of "Ugly Wudi" coincided with the global economic meltdown, and the show offered a balm to the young people who faced grim job prospects.

"People need comic relief anyway," said Zhang, adding that relaxation provided by comedies like "Ugly Wudi" was the best function a TV program could offer.

Luo Xiao, a civil servant in Beijing, watched the television series when he was in his hometown in central Hunan Province during the Spring Festival break. He echoed Zhang's opinion.

"Though it's a bad adaptation, I truly laughed a lot."

"Ugly Wudi" centers on the career of Lin Wudi, a finance graduate who had been struggling to find a job before she joined Concept, a well-known advertisement company. Wearing big black-framed glasses and dressed in ostentatiously unfashionable clothes, she is an ugly girl. Her intelligence and kindness help her rise gradually in the company.

With both favorable and critical reviews, the next season of "Ugly Wudi" is scheduled to be filmed in April.

"I won't miss it," Luo smiled.

Ariel Lin underwent brain surgery; irritable after operation, she tearily complained to her mom for 6 days and nights
User image
Ariel Lin's health is in the red. About getting brain surgery, she finally admitted yesterday, "I had a tumor on my pituitary gland, it was two centimeters long and I had it surgically removed last month. This one month or so, I've matured more than the last 26 years. At one point, I was really scared. I was really worried that I would die." She expressed that, this time, besides being for the pains of her endocrine imbalances, the surgery also allowed her to open up more to connect with her mother. While at the hospital, she was unable to control her emotions and tearily complained to her mom for 6 days and 6 nights, only sleeping when she became too tired to stay awake. Once awake, they would immediately continue bonding.

Ariel said that these past few years, although she controlled her diet, she still would gain weight and her periods were never on schedule. Last June, she had a full body exam which included a CT scan of her brain. It was finally discovered that the problem was in her brain. In the sella, there was an oval shaped tumor. Doctors said that the tumor was nearing the hypothalamus and if it grew any larger, it could have affected her vision. So early this year when she had some time off, she immediately had the operation done in February.

She recalled that: "Before getting full body anesthesia, I was actually very scared. My mom was also scared, so I acted very strong. Up until I was given the anesthesia, I pretended to be calm." Fortunately the surgery was successful. For the following 1 to 2 weeks, due to the operation, she would feel dizzy, sick to the stomach, have bloody noses, and most severely, she would have a short temper.

This whole time, when with her mom, she was very open. Unexpectedly, like a flood, she chatted nonstop with her mom. She said, "It's hard to describe. We expressed our feelings from the bottom of our hearts. Always before, our requests and torments have been invisible to each other. From picking out our faults, loving dearly, and encouraging each other, we found happiness together. We talked until we were hoarse. My mom kept telling me not to talk, but I continually talked for 6 days and 6 nights." Afterwards, she got a throat inflammation and went yesterday to the ENT for an exam.

Ariel's sickness led her to come to a realization. "Before I was always very strict with myself, but now I must change. Especially that both my mom are very restrained, and don't express our feelings. I must slowly change." Her health is in stable condition. In two months, she must return for a follow up. She is already preparing for an album recording.

SKorea's Rain hit with 8 mln dlr court judgement
MSN News

Agents for South Korean star singer and actor Rain said they are consulting their lawyers after a US court ordered them to pay more than eight million dollars for cancelling a concert in Honolulu in 2007.

"This is a result we would never have expected," Jung Wook, president of JYP Entertainment, told Yonhap news agency. "We will decide our future course of legal action in a few days after discussing it with attorneys who are on their way back (to Seoul)."

On Thursday a Honolulu federal jury found Rain and his agency had breached a contract with Click Entertainment to perform a concert almost two years ago. It ordered them to pay the Hawaiian promoter punitive damages and compensation.

Rain's concert was cancelled a few days before its scheduled date of June 15, 2007 at Aloha Stadium, the first stop on his US tour. The tickets cost a maximum 300 dollars each.

Click Entertainment said the cancellation cost it more than 1.5 million dollars and its business reputation was damaged. Rain argued that the concert stage was not properly set up for him. He also said he was unable to use his name in the United States because of a copyright challenge from a US Beatles tribute band also called Rain.

The 26-year-old singer, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon, is one of South Korea's biggest celebrities and has a big following across Asia.

Because of health reasons, Nam Gyuri has no choice but to give up on a scheduled fan meeting organized by VOV cosmetics for which she endorses.

According to a VOV Cosmetics representative, "Nam Gyuri was supposed to attend our VOV showcase (How to make up) on the 20th. But because of a recent injury that she suffered to her ribs causing her pain, it's not possible for her to participate in this event." Nam Gyuri was apparently in so much pain that she was warded yesterday and couldn't quite move about. Thankfully, many of her friends came to the hospital to visit her and alleviate her pain.

According to Gyuri's management, "Gyuri has to receive treatment because of her injured ribs and thus she is unable to take part in the cosmetics company event. That event will be postponed to a later date until she recovers." The injury to her ribs apparently occured while she was rehearsing for her new mini-album which will be released later this month.

Kim Sun-ah shows her sexy side again for her latest photo shoot, this time for beauty magazine Allure. The shoot is described as “chic and modern,” though I think it’s also got a retro flapper vibe with her bobbed hairstyle.

The new look accompanies her next role; Kim’s next drama project is the upcoming City Hall [씨티홀], in which she stars as a mayor.

She says of the role, “I think the different hairstyle in playing the energetic mayor character of Shin Mi-rae was a good change that helped me find a different part of myself to show, and gave me a good feeling. I’ll do my best to suit my character and show many sides of myself.”

City Hall depicts Kim Sun-ah as a woman who worked herself up from lowly official to a mayoral position. It comes from the writer-director combo who worked on the successful SBS drama On Air, Kim Eun-sook and PD Shin Woo-chul. It co-stars Cha Seung-won (Eye for an Eye, Tooth for a Tooth), Chu Sang-mi (My Woman, Snow in August), and Lee Hyung-chul (On Air).

The drama is currently filming and will air on SBS on Wednesdays and Thursdays; it premieres mid-April and will follow the current series, Cain and Abel.

Incidentally, this puts Kim squarely opposite Kwon Sang-woo’s new MBC series, Cinderella Man, as well as a new KBS miniseries called Six Months starring movie stars Kim Ah-joong and Hwang Jung-min,

After four years of absence, Power Station will finally release a new album titled [Keep on Turning]. In addition to composing the song [Love Till Crazy] for her seniors, Ella went a step further and performed in the MV. In the MV, she portrayed a woman who became delusional after receiving a wedding invitation from her boyfriend, imagining that she was having telephone conversation with the boyfriend, shopping and taking walks with the boyfriend, even trying on wedding gowns at a bridal shop and finally, breaking down and trembling inside a closet. The whole MV from beginning to end comprised of Ella’s acting alone which fully demonstrated her consummate acting skills.

[Love Till Crazy] was a song Ella wrote for Power Station. After receiving Power Station’s affirmation, she invited Hebe to write the lyrics. This was to reciprocate Power Station’s gesture of writing and producing the song [Freezer] for them when they first entered the business. Yesterday, when during the shooting of the scene in which Ella was trying on wedding gowns, Power Station, with "wedding candies" in hand, made a special trip to visit her on location. To match the beautiful wedding gown-clad Ella, the two even put on suits, fully displaying their suave and gentlemanly side. As soon as Ella saw them, she excitedly praised her seniors as being suave and even humorously called them “Husband” which made the shy Power Station even more bashful.

Hebe’s lyrics described how a person’s mind could be lost for love. In actuality, both Ella and Power Station had experiences of doing recklessly crazy things when in love. Yu Chu-Hsin with his practical personality was not good at creating romantic moments. When in love, the most he would do was to demonstrate his love and concern through little daily details. He expressed that before, he would bike his girlfriend to and fro from school regardless of the weather condition. Even if he had to wake up an hour earlier, there still would not be any complaint. There was one time he was in an accident when his bicycle skidded because he was speeding in the rain to pick up his girlfriend from school. However, he totally ignored his injuries and for the sake of love, he climbed back on the bicycle and continued onwards. As for Yan Zhi-lin, on the night before his girlfriend’s birthday, he rode on a motorcycle for over an hour to where his girlfriend lived. Once arrived, he threw little rocks at his girlfriend’s window to wake her up. When she opened the window after being awaken, Yan Zhi-Lin said [Happy Birthday] to her and then threw a bouquet of flowers up to her. That moved his girlfriend deeply.

When she was a student, Ella had once climbed a wall for love. She recalled that it was because her boyfriend got so involved in playing in an arcade that he had lost track of the time. It so happened that the arcade was being checked by the police. Because he did not have any ID on him, he was brought to the police station which he called and asked her to go to his home to get his ID. At that time, it was almost two in the morning already. In order to avoid waking up her boyfriend’s parents, Ella had to climb into her boyfriend’s home, used the spare key to open the door, sneaked into the house like a thief, looked for her boyfriend’s ID and brought it to the police station to bail him out.
