This
Wednesday, a compilation album titled "Studio Ghibli no Uta" will be
released, featuring music from the studio's past works. The two-disc
collection contains 26 songs taken from 20 films, ranging from the
"Nausicaa" theme song to the recent "Gake no Ue no Ponyo" tune. The
lyrics booklet will also include images from the movies and their
posters.
On the afternoon of the 22nd, Leehom Wang appeared in Shanghai to
attend an event. During an interview, he confirmed that he will soon
collaborate with Jackie Chan in a new film. When on the topic of him
and Jolin Tsai collaborating in a new ad, he expressed that actually,
the 2 have very little opportunity to work together: “Artists are all
very busy, it’s hard to maintain friendships.”
It was noticed
that Leehom looked very thin, and he said that it is because he is
currently working on his new album, and everyday he only gets to sleep
2-3 hours. 2 days ago, he just returned from New York, he is indeed
quite busy. About working with Jolin in new ad, Leehom expressed,
“Everyone will soon get to see this ad, and will also be able to hear
my new song in it as well. In the ad, you will see me teaching Jolin to
play pool. We filmed for 2 entire days, and our pool skills have
improved a lot, we specially invited a professional teacher to guide
us.” He also said that besides filming this ad together, he actually
has very little opportunity to work with Jolin: “We’re actually been
friends for many years, but artists’ lives are all very busy, and these
kind of friendships are hard to maintain, unless we have the
opportunity to work together like this.”
When asked whether he
will collaborate with Jackie Chan in new film “Young Soldiers”, Leehom
expressed, “Of course I am very anticipating working with Jackie, I’ve
watched his movies since I was little. To Chinese people, he is a hero
in our hearts, to be able to work with him is of course very happy.”
In the past year Ron Ng hasn’t lost any connections, in 2006 he said he
was pretty unlucky, last year there was a good turn and this year he
was able to film two Mainland series earning him a lot of cash making
him feel more relaxed than before. Saying that Ron has no spirit, he
said this year not many of his series aired and next year he is sure
he’ll do better. The opportunity is given to those who are prepared and
the awaken Ron Ng is read to re-enter the spotlight.
After
entering the industry Ron had many rumours, and pretty much all of them
came from filming including those with Ella Koon, Charmaine Sheh, Toby
Leung and Elanne Kong. Every time you read the gossip magazines there
is always something to do with Ron in a negative way making people very
curious. Is Ron’s relationship with the reporters that negative? In
Ron’s eyes this is only a minor problem as it won’t be hard for him to
overcome saying “I have a connection with the audience and also the
reporters”.
“I don’t treat reporters differently, the main
problem is when those readers read these gossip magazines and look at
me from a different perspective. I haven’t actually done anything to
them, actually a lot of those reporters are my good friends, its just
that nobody talks about it and doesn’t let everyone see it either.
I
have been filming everyday and there have been reporters there, we talk
and laugh and even eat together. This news is only a small part of the
whole magazine and not all magazines write about me. You have to
understand that those magazine reporters won’t compliment you by saying
you look pretty or handsome and they won’t say you act well. They might
say next year you will win the Best Actor and become TV King. You don’t
have to see this from my perspective; you have to see what those
magazines think and how they write their articles. You have to read
those things”
Fans say his acting has improved
Fans
who leave messages online say Ron has improved in his acting. But they
feel that TVB hasn’t given him many opportunities, especially this year
they didn’t see a few series with him in it while other siu sings have
had many more.
When Ron heard this he defended TVB saying “I
have been filming two mainland series which has only left me 2 months
this year so I’ve had to immediately film series so that they can air
towards the end of the year or next year so my popularity may rise next
year”. As an undercover cop in Academy Full Throttle Ron said that
having a sequel must have the likes of Kathy Chow and Michael Miu. From
The Academy, On the first Beat to Academy Full Throttle these series
are a “must” continue.
The story in each series has changed,
each one is different. In the first one it was about us learning to
become a cop, in the second it was about being a new “cop” and in the
third it is about a police becoming an undercover cop. The audience
might think that these three series is linked but in fact all of them
are different.
In 2005 Ron released his song Don’t blame her and
even signed with a record company EP. He has temporarily put his
singing career aside and has been focusing on filming his newest series
Wives and Concubines. “If I released an album now I couldn’t go up on
stage and let everyone touch my bald head! At the earliest it would
have to be early next year as this series had to be filmed over 2-3
months. After his hair grows back he might go to China to film a new
series to earn extra income so I’ve been happy recently. I went to
America and Canada to perform which was really good because I’ve been
able to earn some money. In China two of his series have already
started airing and the audience has responded quite well. I watched
myself again in the series and thought my performance was ok.” Ron
thought he has been pretty lucky filming a few series letting him earn
more and giving him an opportunity to act in more series. But he is
still working hard to achieve his dream. He hopes to buy a huge house
for his family to live more comfortably.
Ron spent most of his
time this year filming in China which meant he filmed a lot less HK
series. “I thought this was a good thing because it has helped me see
the actual China market. My series has aired in many places and I hope
I will have an opportunity to emerge in the China market.”
Filming
in China Ron believes it has paid a price as he has been staying there
for about half a year. “To film a series it takes about 2-3 months and
together both series have taken me half a year. In the mainland I had
no friends, only my manager and if I wasn’t filming I’d be studying the
script. I rented many series to see the range of acting skills, life
wasn’t too boring and I could focus solely on my work, it wasn’t bad.”
Being
unfamiliar with the area, not knowing the best restaurants wasn’t the
best because when it came around to deciding meals it always gave Ron
& his manager head-aches. Daily they would go to the near by for a
Hot Pot at a familiar restaurant close by. “It’s good since I’m not
picky with food and apart from the fatty greasy foods; I just ate
whatever there was.”
Wants to act with his idol Fat Brother (Chow Yun Fat)
Ron’s
idol is Chow Yun Fat, his wish is to be able to act with him. When it
comes around to this he won’t stop talking about him. “Chow Yun Fat
will always be my idol. When I hadn’t entered the industry, I would
occasionally bump into him on the streets and take a picture with him.
About 8 years ago I was in the Acting class and the teachers asked a
professional actor to share their skills with us, when they opened the
door I couldn’t believe it was Chow Yun Fat who came in! I was over the
moon. He shared with us his experiences when he entered the industry,
and even the students had many questions to ask! Before it ended we
took a huge group photo with him”.
2-3 months ago Ron bumped
into Chow Yun Fat again. “I was filming an outdoor Academy Full
Throttle scene and we had the block off the roads to film so the cars
had to park to one side. One of the drivers opened the window and
laughed “If you want to film I’ll let you film”, we turned around and
saw the driver was Chow Yun Fat with his mother, the whole group of us
were surprised and really happy”.
Asked if he would be able to
meet up with Chow Yun fat and ask to work together, he laughed “No,
because your partner depends on fate. He is so busy, he won’t work with
me if I give a suggestion. I won’t be able to voice my opinion on whom
I want to work it because the company decides. But if I’m able to work
with him any day I’ll definitely be happy.”
As for the character
he said that filming with Chow Yun Fat would be enough, and he wouldn’t
mind playing any role. “We don’t have to work in a series together, it
could be on stage and I would be so happy.”
Writer’s Postscript- Cold face comedian
Ron
was often in the sun when he was back in Hong Kong making him looked
more tanned than before. And wearing that black jacket of his to do
interviews, as an interview I would always think “Wah, so dark!” But
that’s ok as his mood is just like the sun, always warm and answers the
questions politely. Occasionally he shows the funny side of him “I love
to play games in the sun.” Looking at his expression I just couldn’t
help but laugh that Ron was a Cold Face Comedian!
During this
time I wasn’t able to ask about the series itself, but was just asking
questions here and there. It was good as he spoke quite quickly and
even talked like he was in a normal conversation. It was a 15 minute
interview and this is what I’ve been able to write. Thank you.
Chinese mainland actor and singer Huang Xiaoming breaks away from his
suave image in his latest TV series 'Hidden Fragrance', or 'An Xiang'
in Chinese.
Photos spread on sohu.com revealed Huang's new style, looking cool with a pair of goggles and beach shorts.
Huang co-stars with mainland actress Wang Luodan, known as 'Mi Lai' in the TV series 'Fen Dou'.
The 30-episode TV series started shooting one month ago in Sanya, Hainan Province. It is expected to hit the screens next year.
The complete lineup for this year's Kohaku Uta Gassen has not yet been
announced, but the popular band Mr.Children will reportedly be making
their first appearance at the event. NHK has apparently offered them a
spot nearly every year until now, and they finally accepted. Two of the
four singles that Mr.Children has released this year are related to the
network.
On Monday, NHK officially announced that Masahiro Nakai
and Yukie Nakama will be this year's hosts. The full list of performers
are expected to be revealed soon.
Like a steam train gathering
pace, Taiwanese left field hit and the territory's foreign-language
Oscar contender "Cape No. 7," is gaining serious traction around Asia.
All
Asia Multimedia Network FZ-LLC, a content aggregation arm of the
pan-regional pay-TV group Astro All Asia Networks PLC has acquired
rights to the pic in Malaysia and Brunei from int'l sales firm Good
Film Workshop. Company will release the pic in Malaysia on Christmas
Day (Dec 25).
Pic opened as the top film this weekend in Hong
Kong, earning a four day take of HK$2.01 million ($259,000) from a
mid-sized release on only 23 screens through Lighten Distribution.
At
home in Taiwan, the have-a-go story of a despondent musician who finds
his groove with a band of eccentric amateurs had a slow start but has
played on to become the second biggest film of all time at the
Taiwanese box office, behind "Titanic." In its continuing two month run
it has grossed NT460 million ($13.8 million) to date.
Pic is now
getting the blockbuster treatment in Singapore ahead of an 11 print
release Thursday through Festive Films and Cathay Keris Films.
Stars
Van Fan, Tanaka Chie and Shino Lin, better known as musicians than
actors, are skedded to do three days of promotions in Singapore with
set pieces including an open-top bus tour, appearances at a shopping
mall and a gala preem at the Cineleisure Orchard theater. Director Wei
Te-sheng did press interviews in Singapore three weeks ago.
"We
are expecting a lot," film publicist Flora Goh said. "That it has been
such a breakout hit in Taiwan is a major selling point. And we have had
several screenings here that have confirmed its appeal. The public has
loved it."
Pic is also set for release in China through dominant
distribber China Film Group, though release date is not yet confirmed.
Permission is a surprise given that most films from Taiwan, which China
regards as a renegade province, do not get approval. Pic also contains
a significant sub-plot involving a romance between a Taiwanese woman
and a Japanese teacher in the 1940s, a time when the island was under
Japanese occupation.

Fuji TV has announced a broadcast date for its "Code Blue" drama
special. The episode is scheduled to air on January 10 at 9:00pm.
The
special is a continuation of the "Code Blue" drama series from this
past summer, which starred Tomohisa Yamashita, Erika Toda, Yui Aragaki,
and Yosuke Asari as four young doctors training in an emergency
helicopter program. The show started out with 21.2% ratings and
finished with an average of 15.9%, the highest of the summer dramas.
After bleeding from production costs and less than ideal ratings,
KBS2TV Happy Sunday Kko Kko Single ended it’s run this past Sunday on a
quiet note.
Kko Kko Single broadcasted it’s final episode on
23rd November after a total of only 10 episodes which took them to
Saipan Island (6 episodes) and Jeju Island (final 4). The program which
bought “single” celebrities together and putting them on dates was cut
because of it’s low ratings and high cost.
This was an
unfortunate ending for Kko Kko Single particularly as it was facing
Family Outing which had been enjoying rave reviews and high ratings.
The
final episode saw Shin Dong Wook ending up with Jin Bora, Hwang
Chansung with Jung Si Ah and Yuri with Jo Dong Hyuk. But the spotlight
undoubtedly fell on the Lee Minwoo (M) and Amy couple who was the only
couple to be paired up on 2 consecutive editions (Saipan, Jeju Island)
and with outside talk of them carrying their love into real life.
Everyone was curious about whether they would continue to have trips
like this together after this.
Following the termination of Kko
Kko Single, KBS2TV has resurrected Immortal Music Classic from the
grave and likely to be hosted by Shin Jung Hwan and Tak Jae Hoon again.
This will be a special arrangement until further notice. Singer Patti
Kim will be the first guest following by Kim Jong Kook.
Coming on the heels of his drama announcement for Cinderella Man, Kwon
Sang-woo is announcing his next film project, starring alongside Lee
Bo-young (Queen of the Game). If you thought from reading about
Cinderella Man that Kwon playing a dual role with an identity
switcheroo in a trendy drama sounded out of character, you’ll be
relieved to see him back in his usual tearjerker role for the film A
Story Sadder Than Sadness.
This’ll be Lee Bo-young’s third
leading film role, following previous movies Once Upon a Time and I Am
Happy, and her second time working with Kwon; they teamed previously
for an ad campaign for the cosmetic brand The Face Shop (at right).
In
A Story Sadder than Sadness, they’ll play a radio station PD and
songwriter, who for some reason have harbored longtime affections but
have been unable to express them to each other. Lee Beom-soo (On Air)
is a dentist in love with Lee’s character.
Interestingly enough,
the director is actually a bestselling poet (oxymoron?) in his
directorial debut, and the film will be produced by the company behind
Unstoppable Wedding and Go-sa: Bloody Midterms, distributed by CJ
Entertainment.
The movie starts filming next month and will be released on White Day (March 14).
